A Golden Shepherd Dog is a mixed breed consisting of a German Shepherd Dog and a Golden Retriever, usually produced as a mistake by irresponsible pet owners.
Is the Golden Shepherd a “designer” or “hybrid” dog?
There are some places on the web who will sell you a slice of the moon or let you register any accidental breeding of dogs. On organization, the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC), lists the Golden Shepherd as a dog breed. But, keep in mind they also let you register “Foodles”, “Taco Terriers” and “Fo-Chons”.
Are Golden Shepherds good dogs?
Interestingly enough, when I went to purchase my first canine companion, I had a tough time choosing between a German Shepherd and a Golden Retriever. Both dogs are great dogs! And there is no doubt in my mind that a random mix of a Golden & a Shepherd would likely be a great dog as well. If you are looking for a good companion, a “Golden Shepherd” may be the perfect dog for you!
Finding Reputable Golden Shepherd Breeders
There is absolutely zero doubt in my head that there are likely NO “good” Golden Shepherd breeders anywhere on the planet. That’s because any “good” breeder is focused on improving the breed they are working with. Even these breeders are few and far between. No reputable breeder mixes random dogs just to see what happens.
What should a Golden Shepherd cost?
I would expect a “Golden Shepherd Dog” puppy to run between $50 – $300.
This is completely up to you. A West German Show Line German Shepherd Dog could run you $3,000. An AKC registered Golden Retriever could run you $1,200. That said, expect a well taken care of dog of any breed to cost you $500. In other cases a rescue or someone who accidentally bred a “Golden Shepherd” may be willing to give the pups away for free. Trust me when I tell you, you do NOT want to have 6 or 7 10-week old puppies running around your house, so anyone who has accidentally produced a litter of Golden Shepherds should be willing to part with their pooches on the cheap.
