What is National Dog Day?

National Dog Day is celebrated annually on August 31st and serves to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe, and bring comfort.

History of National Dog Day

National Dog Day, and the associated hashtag used on social media, #NationalDogDay, was founded in 2004 by animal advocate, Colleen Paige. The day is often used to raise awareness of the gigantic number of unwanted animals, promote pet rescue and adoption, and raise awareness of poor breeding practices applied by backyard breeders and breeders who sell animals in pet stores, (and promote responsible breeding, which is quite rare these days). Most often, the hashtag is used on social media to share dog pictures. The official website is www.nationaldogday.com.

From 2004 – 2015, National Dog Day took place on August 26. On August 27, 2015, NationalDogDay.com announced on their home page that the holiday would be celebrated on August 31 starting August 31, 2016 because “it was drawing focus away from Women’s Equality Day”. On social media, handful of people complained and the vast majority celebrating both holidays exactly the way they wanted to, or both.

Anyways, here’s Aura, our German Shepherd, wishing you a happy National Dog Day.
